New Year’s Resolutions For Your Car

January 6th, 2016 by

It’s hard to believe, but 2016 is here. There is a lot of excitement around the dealership entering the New Year. As we all formulate our New Year’s resolutions, let’s take a minute to think about one resolution that we often overlook: one for your car.
This may seem trivial when compared to a weight loss or spiritual goal, but think about all the trust you put in your car: getting to work, the kids to school, a road trip to see the in-laws, etc. You spend so much time in your vehicle – it really is part of your family – so why don’t you give it the love it deserves?

Make 2016 your best year yet in terms of taking care of your vehicle by committing to these 5 New Year’s resolutions for your car!

1. Schedule at Least Two Service Appointments

Regular maintenance checkups are vital for the longevity and overall health of your vehicle. We are often guilty of thinking our vehicle is invincible. Reality check: it’s not!! We put a lot of faith in our vehicles; make sure you take care of it by being proactive and addressing the warning lights on your dashboard. You don’t want your dashboard looking like a Christmas tree. Christmas has come and gone. Take precaution and schedule regular maintenance checkups.

If you’ve never serviced with us before, please take a moment and read why we’re Aberdeen’s preferred service center.

2. Listen to Your Service Advisor

Let’s take a minute to clear up a common misconception: service advisors and technicians are not out to overcharge you or suggest unwarranted service repairs. On the contrary, actually. Our Service Team’s only job is to get you back on the road safely and in a timely manner.

Of course, there are some service departments out there that try and take advantage of the customer, but not Aberdeen Chrysler. Our service advisors and certified technicians are trained to report exact details of their comprehensive inspection so you can make the best decision for your situation.

Remember, Aberdeen Chrysler is a one-stop shop for all your automotive needs. We’re not solely focused on selling you a vehicle. We want to provide you with a stress-free experience throughout all of our departments so we earn your business for life.

3. Know Your Tires

Put your money where your tires are. Literally. You can check your tire tread depth at home by digging into your piggy bank and using pennies and quarters to measure tread depth.

Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Lincoln’s head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 2/32″ of tread depth remaining.

Place a quarter into several tread grooves across the tire. If part of Washington’s head is always covered by the tread, you have more than 4/32″ of tread depth remaining.

Place a penny into several tread grooves across the tire. If the top of the Lincoln Memorial is always covered by the tread, you have more than 6/32″ of tread depth remaining.

The Law

Most states, South Dakota included, consider tires to be legally worn out when they have worn down to 2/32″ tread depth. As a precaution to help warn drivers, tires sold in North America are required to have “wear bar” indicators molded into their tread design. These wear bars run across the tread patter from their outside shoulder to inside shoulder. They are designed to visually connect elements of the tire’s tread pattern and warn drivers when the tires no longer meet minimum tread depth requirements.

Reality Check

Even though tires aren’t considered legally worn out until 2/32″, it’s important to realize that there are decreases in performance long before that. Specifically, hydroplaning becomes more likely as your tread depth nears 2/32″, as well as loss of control on wet and icy roads.

With the conditions we endure in South Dakota, you should consider replacing your tires at 5/32″.
